This sewing trick is one of my favorites. A while ago I would had not even imagined we could sew buttons with the sewing machine! But after seeing all those gadgets that come when you buy a sewing machine and doing my little research on some of them, I discovered you could easily sew your buttons with the sewing machine.
I am a lazy hand-stitcher so that was a great news for me. So if like me, you like things nicely and quickly done, this sewing tip will please you.
To sew your buttons with the machine you will need the foot you see below on the left side. And most certainly, you will need the little plastic pad tool that you see on the right. My sewing machine doesn’t need that tool, it has a little switch button behind to lower the teeth.
Place the foot as usual and the plastic pad tool on top of your sewing machine walking teeth to cover them.
Catch your fabric and button in between the button foot and the plastic pad tool where you’d like the button to be sewn. See picture below.
Adjust your zig zag stitch to match the width of the holes in the button. And manually lower the needle to make sure it goes inside both holes (and doesn’t tap on the button as this would break your needle).
If your button has two lines of holes (4 holes in total), cut your thread when you have done the first one and do the same thing on the second line. Move your button so that the needle goes inside the two lower holes.
And as simple as that, your button is sewn to your fabric! If like in my case, you don’t need the plastic pad tool, don’t forget to bring the walking teeth up or you won’t be able to keep sewing 😉
